The Stud History

In 1978 when the Powys Stud was first established, the Powys prefix not yet registered, we acquired Baledon Starlette. She was out of Coed Coch Dunos, who was by Coed Coch Salsbri out of Coed Coch Suran. Starlette herself was by Baledon Morning Star, by Coed Coch Saled. The children had a lot of fun with her at the time! Nowadays there is regretfully no offspring of hers at the Stud anymore, she did however set the type we still go for today.

The second mare to come into the very young stud was
Tyisha Merry Lady by Monnow Squire out of Tyisha Merrylegs by Rhydyfelin Syndod. It was this Rhydyfelin / Coed Coch connection in both Starlette and Merry Lady that set us in our direction. Tyisha Merry Lady herself combined very well with Coed Coch Brodor, (Coed Coch Pryd x Coed Coch Siwan), a well known stallion in our region at the time. We later acquired her daughter Rakts Peggy, both were rather successful in the showring in their day.

There has been a gap of some nine years in the Stud’s activity, mainly due to ill health caused by a rather serious motorbike accident. Unfortunately because of that, the ponies had to be sold, but some Pedigree Suffolk Sheep remained at first. After that ugly period, being able to walk again, with the sheep gone, we once more set off with the ponies. We really started again when we registered our
Powys (NL) prefix. We had been breeding for quite some years under the Dutch Society banner, but we thought that was not the way to do it after all. When we tried to register our chosen prefix Powys, we had to add (NL) to it because there was already a prefix pronounced the same, although written differently and inactive in Wales!

It really took off seriously again when we bought
Lacy Sable, here in the Netherlands. We had heard about her before, being a very good brood mare, but nothing came of it until she arrived in this country, when she was bought at the Fayre Oaks Sale by Harold Zoet. At the time she was in foal to Coed Coch Bleddyn, which we liked very much, so of course we bought her. The best thing that ever happened to us! We sold three other mares we had at the time and started all over again! In due time Lacy Sable gave us the grey filly Powys Sian.

When we visited Colin Tibbey’s Lacy Stud later, we were very impressed by Blackhill Picalo, another of the Lacy Stud stallions and decided there and then to have Sable covered by him, if possible. So we took Lacy Sable to Wales and the result a year later was the bay colt Powys Shon, now an eight year old stallion.
During this visit to the Lacy Stud we saw
Lacy Fleur and not long after that she too joined us at our Stud. She has Sunwillow, Coed Coch and Crossways bloodlines. The Crossway being an old Friars and Coed Coch mix. Fleur was in foal to Gredington Calon Lan, the result was Powys Jack Flash, a very well known pony by now! For us it all started anew from these two mares, Lacy Sable and Lacy Fleur.

But there were three more mares we had that were special to us:

Bengad Rosina

Bengad Rosina

When at one time we visited Mandy Burchell Small’s Rowfantina Stud we saw a bay mare we liked a lot. This was Bengad Rosina, by Bengad Dogberry out of Bengad Ribbon Grass. We started off by buying her for someone else, but she ended up at our Stud and gave in combination with Rhydyfelin Story a very nice, extremely good moving grey filly foal Powys Rosebud, who by now has had her first very nice (colt) foal by Bengad Waterleaf. Rosebud was sold as a two year old to Marius Meeus, Langvennen Stud, here in The Netherlands. She was recently shown for the first time and did well. Bengad Rosina is now at the Highflown Stud near Rotterdam.

Coringwould Witching Hour

Whinney as we called her was bred by our friend Paddie Lorenzen. When we were looking for Lacy Sable’s offspring in Kent we met Witching Hour and were very much taken by her. Witching Hour is by Breachwood Marwyn, and out of Kingswould Witch Hazel by Springbourne Herian. She had a very nice Rondeels Pengwyn- Coed Coch Pwffiad line in her that we liked a lot. We combined her twice, she had never been in foal before, with Rhydyfelin Story. The results were two very nice filly foals, in the end both returned with Whinney to their dam’s breeder Paddie Lorenzen in Kent. They have been backed now and are doing a very good job at that, having won on several occasions in different classes, both under saddle and in hand.

Lacy Judie

Lacy JudieJudie was by Gredington Calon Lan out of Criban Piccolo. So she was out of a really classic line, combining Criban, Coed Coch and Bowdler lines. We first saw Lacy Judie at the Centannial Stud, when she was in foal to Friars Superman, we bought her with her foal going back to Centannial. A year later, we had come to love her a lot, we lost her in foal to Langevoren Reuben, close to her foaling date, a terrible loss.

We have a selection of homebred stock for sale each year of all ages.

Visitors are very welcome but please phone first.
